New diesel engine leads refinements for 2007. introductionpickup trucks are america's ultimate raw material. Generic in concept, the lowly pickup truck can be configured in dozens, even hundreds of ways to suit any need and price point. The dodge ram heavy duty lineup is a perfect example. the heavy-duty rams have been with us for a few years now. Last redesigned for 2003, they aren't nearly as new as the latest from ford and general motors but benefit from some recent freshening. new for 2007: the ram heavy duty benefits from a new diesel engine and automatic transmission plus some minor refinements. the ram mega cab was launched as a 2006 model. Mega cab is built on the heavy duty chassis and comes fitted with the hemi engine. The extra-large mega cab was created by re-proportioning the relationship between cab and bed on a long wheelbase truck, adding 20 inches to the cab and shortening the bed to 6 feet, three inches. the result is acres of cab space, with six seats and plenty of head, shoulder, leg and hip room. The back seats are roomy and comfortable with reclining seatbacks, separate rear heating and air conditioning outlets, reading lights and a center armrest with cup holders, and available dvd entertainment. And there's space behind the back seats for cargo. Folding down the back seats reveals a huge cargo area (72. 2 cubic feet) with a flat load floor. The rear doors open big and wide, making it easy to load stuff inside. Covered bins are provided back there for storing gear and smaller items, and hooks are provided for hanging things. the mega cab ram rides and drives like a heavy duty pickup, regardless of 1500, 2500, or 3500 rating. It provides engine braking down long highway grades, thereby leaving the brakes cool, fade-free, and ready for stopping. Because of the added length of the second-row seating area, the air bag system had to be redesigned with larger side curtain air bags. Each side air bag has its own impact sensor in order to trigger the air bag on the side where impact occurs. from the driver's seat, the view is of a wide center stack with large knobs and buttons, precisely finished with consistent angles and cut lines throughout. The instrument panel cluster is located under a prominent dash brow to reduce glare and improve visibility of six white-faced gauges, the latter numbered on diesel-engine models. Rectangular, slat-type air vents close flush. there is a marked distinction between trim levels. In st trim, the dash is textured plastic with synthetic-look inserts on the slt. The laramie package makes extensive use of wood trim inside, with less plastic, for a more distinctive appearance. the seats are generously padded and proved to be comfortable, especially the six-way driver's seat in the laramie, which can be shifted around as any particular position becomes tiresome on long trips. The leather upholstery adds a rich appearance to the interior of laramie models. With the optional front bucket seats, a new center console extends from the dashboard. Even those of us used to operating domestic pickups and tow vehicles are aware of the ram's imposing size and stance. Inside the cabin, it is a long reach to hand something across the console to a passenger, and there would be no hope of leaning across to open the passenger door, or grab something from the opposite door pocket. Interior door handles are large and heavily built, consistent with the large size of the ram doors. the cabin is loaded with nicely sized trays, slots and pockets. It seemed there was always a safe place to put something down, yet keep it within easy reach. The armrest opens in two parts and center console is big enough for a laptop, and is designed with fold-down dividers. the optional 5. 8-inch navigation screen is surrounded by buttons and knobs; perhaps a bit on the small side but located up high for good viewing. 2007 dodge nitro review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new mid-size suv. introductionthe 2007 dodge nitro is an all new mid-size suv. Dodge redesigned the full-size durango in 2004, and since then has been planning the nitro, which is 22 inches shorter. There are many mid-size suvs out there, and dodge wanted the nitro to be distinctive, in order to keep up its reputation for bold styling. The result is a very squared-off vehicle, with exaggerated fender flares. the nitro looks and feels larger than its size, with a high seating position that suv owners like, and good cabin space. It features load 'n' go, a cargo storage system whereby the rear seats and front passenger seat fold totally flat in seconds; additionally, the cargo floor slides rearward out over the rear bumper, and can hold 400 pounds, making the loading of heavy objects much easier. The new 4. 0-liter v6 is better than the old 3. 7-liter, with 50 more horsepower and fuel economy that's only one or two miles per gallon less. However the 4. 0-liter engine only comes in the top-of-the-line r/t model, which costs about $2700 more than the most popular slt. No matter which covering, the seats are very comfortable. Standard equipment includes cloth upholstery, air conditioning, remote entry with power windows and door locks, 115-volt power outlet, flat folding front passenger seat, 60/40 folding rear bench seat, am/fm/cd with mp3 and six speakers, tilt steering column, traction control and brake assist, slate-colored molded front and rear fascias and fender flares, folding power mirrors, rear window washer/wiper, and 16-inch steel wheels. the slt 22,635) and slt 4wd 24,145) come standard with the automatic. The slt adds stain-resistant cloth seats, power six-way adjustable driver's seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, load 'n go cargo storage system with tie-down rails, overhead console, cruise control, heated mirrors, compass, auto-dimming rearview mirror, vehicle information instrumentation, tinted windows, body-colored front and rear fascias and fender flares, and 17-inch aluminum wheels. the r/t 25,310) features a new 4. 0-liter v6 making 260 horsepower, mated to a five-speed automatic. The r/t comes with a sports suspension with 20-inch wheels and goodyear eagle tires. The r/t is equipped like the slt, though it also has sirius satellite radio. options for all three models include a power sunroof, foglamps, engine block heater, full-size spare tire, and trailer tow package. Full-time 4wd is an option on the part-time 4wd sxt and slt models. Options for the slt and r/t include leather upholstery, navigation system, remote start, hands-free phone, am/fm/6cd/cd/dvd/mp3 sound system with eight speakers plus subwoofer. The optional mygig multimedia infotainment system features navigation, audio, entertainment and communication wrapped into one, along with voice command and a 20-gigabyte hard drive to store music and photos. walkarounddodge publicity makes a big thing about the nitro's looks, citing its so-called athleticism. We might call it brawny, but mostly it just looks boxy. The exaggerated fender flares are the only rounded parts in the styling. Every other angle is square-ish. It looks and feels larger than mid-size, which some will find to be a good thing. from the front, it's unmistakably dodge. It's got that big crosshair grille, which looks much better in body color (r/t) than chrome (sxt, slt). It's intended to look like a cooling slot. It's a nice touch, and for such a small piece it goes a long way toward relaxing the nitro's blocky shape. in silhouette, with its relatively upright windshield, very high beltline and rectangular windows, plus short front overhang, its shape is reminiscent of, say, a '62 dodge power wagon. But from the rear three-quarter angle, the lines around the rear glass are reminiscent of its bigger cousin, the jeep commander. The much narrower sidewall on the 20-inch tires doesn't appear to offer much defense against flats. interiorthe sxt comes in a basic cloth, but the cloth in the slt and r/t is something called yes essentials; it claims to repel stains, control odors and reduce static electricity. There are three big main instruments: speedo in center, tach on right and fuel and temp on left. They're very good looking and especially legible, with the digital information still visible in the sun because the three pods are thoughtfully shrouded. Chrysler does gauges right, and generally blows gm out of the water when it comes to handsome style and function. there's good front seat legroom, and it feels like there's even more because the dashboard is narrow, making the cabin feel nothing like that in a minivan. The dash also has an insert over the center stack, about 6 by 9 inches with grippy rubber at the bottom, and it's perfect for, well, things. The glovebox is the full width of the passenger side. rearview visibility is very good, with just windows back there, no attempt at swoopy styling with sheetmetal. And again, because the front fenders have no rise or real shape, it's easy to see the front corners of the vehicle, making parking a relief compared to many vehicles this size. the square theme continues with the center stack and its instruments and buttons for the sound system and climate control, although nowadays many cars look like that, which isn't bad, just almost natural. Everything is clean, easy to operate, and easy to understand. There's a shallow tray in the top of the center console storage bin, and a deep compartment under that; as one lady on the press launch said, it's big enough to stash her cat, on road trips. but the nitro really rises to the occasion behind the front seat. The load 'n go function quickly and easily flops the 60/40 rear seats and front passenger seat totally flat. With the liftgate raised, the carpeted (washable vinyl on the sxt) cargo floor slides rearward 18 inches, out over the bumper, saving a loader's back. The 3. 7-liter engine is rather harsh-sounding, but the nitro's sound-deadening material muffles it well. finally, the air conditioning might be fine on a normal hot day, but it seemed marginal for searing conditions. We drove from san diego to palm springs on a september day, and when we got there it was 104 degrees. The ac was going full blast, and it wasn't doing the job. The fan was blowing strong, but the air coming out of the vents wasn't cold enough to cool the cabin. driving impressionafter long driv. All-new compact boasts innovative design and features. introductiondodge has introduced a remarkable replacement for the neon. There's also a choice of front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, the latter making the caliber a capable winter vehicle. The caliber is relatively affordable. Its starting price is below last year's neon, and fuel economy is respectable, achieving 28/32 city/highway miles per gallon in its most frugal form, according to federal government estimates. At the other end of the scale, an srt4 version is expected in spring 2007 with a turbocharged engine generating 300 horsepower. the front seats are comfortable, with lots of headroom, and there's a large amount of cargo space here. Packaging is functional, with folding rear seats that have an optional reclining adjustment and an optional fold-flat front passenger seat to make room for a ladder or more likely, a surfboard. A couple of innovative options, especially for a car in this price class, are an air conditioned compartment in the glove box to chill water bottles or sodas and a swing-down stereo speaker panel attached to the liftgate that converts the back end to a sound stage for beach parties or tailgating. the caliber is no sports car, but we most enjoyed the mid-level sxt model with the 2. 0-liter engine and five-speed manual transmission. dodge is gambling a huge chunk of change on the hope new car shoppers looking for value and function can be persuaded hatchbacks are acceptable again, that five-door, small wagons have a place in american garages. The first two are available with a five-speed manual or an automatic continuously variable transmission. the se 13,425) comes with the 1. 8-liter engine and five-speed manual transmission. The 2. 0-liter engine is optional 100), and both engines are available with the cvt automatic 1000). Air conditioning is not standard, nor are power windows. The se comes with manual roll-up windows and manual outside mirrors. options for the se are as extensive as the standard equipment is basic. The power equipment group 545) includes power windows, outside mirrors and keyless remote central locking. There are two uplevel stereos, one adding cassette and mp3 capability and six-disc cd changer 420), the other just mp3 and the six-disc changer 320). Two other audio options are available, sirius satellite radio 195), including a pre-paid, one-year subscription, and a speaker package called musicgate power 435) comprising a boston acoustics sound system with nine speakers. A trailer tow group 130) adds an engine oil cooler and a wiring harness. the sxt 15,425) also comes standard with the 1. 8-liter engine and five-speed manual, with the 2. 0-liter engine and cvt optional, but the list of standard features expands dramatically. Seat heaters can be ordered for the cloth seats 250). Cruise control is available 250), as is a sunroof 750), and uconnect, a bluetooth, hands-free cell phone capability 275). A driver convenience group 400) adds a compass, an ambient temperature gauge, homelink, auto-dimming inside mirror and a tire pressure monitoring system. A security group 275) includes the cargo area cover, an alarm and an air filtration system. A sport package 645) includes fog lamps, 17-inch aluminum wheels and a sport appearance interior group with contrasting inserts on the cloth seats and color-keyed instrument bezels and gear indicator for the automatic transmission. Aluminum wheels are available 400). Audio options and other items listed above are also available. the r/t 19,425) comes standard with the 2. 4-liter engine, the cvt, and all-wheel drive. Standard features include the sxt features, the sport appearance interior group, cruise control, leather-clad steering wheel with audio controls, cargo cover, a sport suspension with performance steering and p215/55r18 all-season performance tires on aluminum wheels. Massive headlights are notched into the leading corners of the front fenders. A pouting lower lip-like bumper separates the grille and headlights from a slimmer, lower air intake and (uplevel) fog lamps. the side view shows strongly blistered fenders front and rear beneath a wedge-shaped beltline. The lower portions of the doors wear longitudinal moldings, again, body color or chrome highlighted, that look like a bi-level rocker panel but aren't, but that nevertheless minimize the caliber's height. Full-round door handles, either chrome-trimmed or body color, bridge scooped-out grip spaces. the roofline arcs cleanly from its junction with the hood just aft of the front wheel well over the side door windows to pinch off at the tail end of the rear quarter glass. Topping this arc but stopping at the top of the backlight (rear windscreen) is an unbroken, thick strip of black molding the caliber's designers say is supposed to work with the arc and the truncated back end to impart a coupe look. We're not sure why that was important or that it necessarily succeeds, but it does buff up the caliber's side aspect. the back end pulls from the magnum, too, with a steeply raked backlight beneath a roof-mounted spoiler and above a mostly upright lower liftgate, employing a hatchback style arguing against any comparisons with a traditional station wagon. A relatively short rear overhang and oversize taillight housings add credence to the argument. interiorstep inside the caliber and the dodge legacy is loud and clear. Gauges are large, round and gleefully legible. The center stack presents the stereo face and climate control panel in stark relief with functional knobs, buttons and switches and trimmed in matte metallic plastic or not-very-convincing wood grain. the shift lever extends from the base of the stack; the notched gate on the cvt makes ratio selections intuitive, the manual gearbox less so, but not bad for a front-wheel-drive. The power point serves neither the cell phone holder nor a radar detector well; located at the extreme base of the center stack, it leaves cords either draped over the center console's cup holders or dangling down the dash between the instrument cluster and the center stack. the mp3 player/cell phone holder flips up out of the front of the center console armrest and, while properly sized for an ipod or similarly shaped mp3 device, adapts best to candy bar-style cell phones. This eases climbing in and out. the front seats are comfortable, but far from plush, with decently bolstered back cushions. Bottom cushions, or squabs in designer lingo, are more flat than sculpted and a bit short on thigh support. Front-seat headroom is impressive, topping the five-door mazda3 hatchback by almost two inches, the five-door ford focus zx5 hatchback by almost an inch. It falls short of the pontiac vibe and toyota matri.
